Three die in Dominica Landslide

Situation Report # 2 (Update) - Tuesday, May 25, 2010 as, at 12.00 noon
Three persons died yesterday in a landslide in Bayside, San Sauveur, Dominica.  The Office of Disaster Management (ODM) reported that on Monday 24, 2010 at approximately 8.45 a.m, a landslide triggered by heavy rains overnight buried a house and claimed the lives of a 43 year old man, a 76 year old woman and a 6 year old boy. ODM has informed that the bodies have been taken to the Princess Margaret Hospital, where autopsies will be carried out to determine the cause of death.


Another person who was in the house at the time escaped without injury. An unoccupied house was also destroyed.

An Incident Command Post was established at the site and search and rescue teams were deployed early. The bodies were recovered late in the afternoon, about 6.00pm.

Slides also occurred in the Depar, Mopo and Goodhope areas but there were no reports of injuries.  

The Office of Disaster Management has also stated that one family in the vicinity of the deadly San Sauveur slide was evacuated yesterday evening, due to the unstable soil conditions.

San Sauveur is a coastal village on the East Northeast of Dominica.
