Message:

Surface trough dumps heavy rains which resulted in severe flooding and landslides in Saint Lucia.

Event:

A surface trough began affecting Saint Lucia from about 9:00 p.m. on November 17, 2010, producing heavy rains throughout the island.  This has resulted in several landslides and widespread flooding.
Prognosis:
The forecast over the next 24 hours is for more rain.

Impact:

The National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) has provided an overview of the impact from the system.

• One 12 year old boy drowned when swept area by floods.
• Flooding was observed in several areas including Castries, Bexon, and Coolie Town.
• Several landslides have been reported island-wide.

National Actions:

• The National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC) which was winding down its activation since the passing of Hurricane Tomas has been fully activated.
• The Ministry of Education closed schools today - Fifth formers returned to school today and several private schools had started operating.
• Shelters remain open throughout the island.
• NEMO has recommended that businesses close for the rest of the day.

CDEMA made contact with the Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) in Saint Lucia to get an overview and will continue to monitor the situation.
