EVENTS:
The situation has deteriorated within the last 12 hours. There was a significant development in the weather patterns over Guyana with approximately 3 - 4 inches of rainfall over the last 8 hours. There has been 2 - 3.5 inches of rainfall in the Mahaica/Mahaicony areas resulting in a rise in the water of the creeks to the highest levels for this rainy season. This rainfall has created flood conditions along the low laying areas of the coastlands resulting in inundation of the previously flooded areas that were beginning to drain off. There are also reports of flooding in Bartica and areas of Region # 2 and 3. The level of water in the EDWC is at the critical stage and the dams are threatened. A decision has been made to once again release water into the Mahaica Creek.

PROGNOSIS:
The National Drainage and Irrigation Authority is aggressively monitoring the situation in the conservancies throughout the affected regions and taking remedial actions. Hydomet Department predicts that this weather is likely to continue until Wednesday March 23 and the highest tide for the month is expected tomorrow (Sunday) at 0420 hours (3.35 metres).  

IMPACT:
The total losses and number of persons affected to date is yet to be determined.

ACTIONS TAKEN:
The CDC has assumed Level 1 Activation of the NEOC and will be deploying a team to the Mahaica Creek to do an assessment.
