Hon. Edmund Hinkson

Minister of Home Affairs Government of Barbados

The Honourable Edmund Gregory Hinkson is the current Minister of Home Affairs in Barbados and the Member of Parliament for Saint James North.

Hon. Minister Mr. Hinkson was educated at Harrison College, then at Cave Hill Campus of the University of the West Indies where he earned a Bachelor’s of Laws Degree with Honours, a Certificate in Legal Education and a Master’s in Business Law.

A Director of the Council for the Disabled and Member of the Association of Blind and Deaf, Edmund Hinkson is nationally recognized as being one of the leading advocates in the promotion of rights for persons with disabilities. He in March, 2015 laid in Parliament a Private Member’s Resolution urging Parliament to enact Disabilities legislation. He is also the former Deputy Chairman of the National Advisory Committee on the promotion of the Rights and Needs of Persons with Disabilities.

Edmund Hinkson is presently a Life Member of the Lions Club of Bridgetown, having served as the Leader of the Lions Clubs in Barbados in 2009-10 and having been honoured as the Best President out of 67 Lions Clubs in the Caribbean Sub-District 60B in 2005-2006.

He served as a Member of the Advisory Board of Directors of the Salvation Army between 2008-13 and as a Member of the Council of the Saint John Ambulance Association for Barbados between 2002-05.

Edmund Hinkson, who was previously a University of the West Indies’ Law Faculty part-time lecturer, has also served as a Sub-Committee Chairman of the local Small Business Association and a Member of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Internationally, Edmund Hinkson has been a Member of the International Bar Association since 1993, serving as Secretary and Chairman of its Negligence and Damages Sub-Committee for two years in 2004-05 and in 2010-11 respectively. He has also been a Member of the Commonwealth Lawyers’ Association since 2007, a Member of International Who’s Who of Professionals as well as of Who’s Who of Barbados Business.

He is a former Chairman of the National Conservation Commission and the Severance Payments Tribunal. Additionally, he is a former Deputy Chairman of the National Housing Corporation and of the Building Advisory Committee as well as a Member of the first Consumer Claims Tribunal, of the Income Tax Appeal Board and of the Board of Management of Harrison College as well as a Director of the National Cultural Foundation.

Edmund was elected to the Barbados House of Assembly in the 21 February 2013 General Election and retained his seat in the 24 May 2018 election with a subsequent appointment as Minister of Home Affairs in the Mia Mottley Adminsitration.
