Message: The Civil Defence Commission in Guyana has reported  that continuous and heavy rainfall over the last 48 hours has resulted in flooding in several communities including the capital, Georgetown.  

EVENT:
Guyana has been experiencing continuous and heavy rainfall mainly in Regions 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, & 10 over the last 48 hours. This has resulted in flooding in the farmlands, residential areas and businesses in several communities on the low coastal plain of these Regions including the capital city, Georgetown. Initial reports from the Regions stated that some homes of residents are inundated with between 2 to 6 inches of water. However, over the last 12 hours, rainfall has eased and water was receding in these affected areas.

EVENTS:
Guyana has been experiencing heavy intermittent and continuous showers across the coast mainly in Region 2, 3,4,5,6 over the last 72 hrs, resulting in flooding in the farmlands, residential areas and businesses in the several communities on the low coastal plain of these Regions including the capital city. The water level in the Mahaicony and Mahaica Creeks has risen. National Drainage and Irrigation Authority advised that due to the excess water in the Lama Conservancy a decision was made to release water through the Mahaica Creek today March 15th 2011. This has to be done to preventing over topping and breaches that can be caused due to the excess water in the conservancy.

Guyana continues to experiencing heavy intermittent and continuous showers across the coast mainly in Region 2,3,4,5,6 over the last 24 hours, resulting in flooding in the farmlands, residential areas and businesses in the several communities on the low coastal plain of these Regions including the capital city. It was reported that the water level in the Mahaicony and Mahaica Creeks has remains the same as of yesterday. National Drainage and Irrigation Authority advised that releasing of excess water through the Mahaica Creek will continue. This has to be done to prevent over topping and breaches that can be cause due to the excess water in the conservancy.

EVENTS:
There has been a break in the weather pattern over the last 24 hours. Flood waters have receded in all the regions that were previously affected. However, there are reports that there are accumulations of water in some farm areas in Region 2, 3 and 6. Some sections of Canals No 1 and 2, Parika, Naamryek, Meten-Meer-Zorg and De Kindren are still flooded in the backlands. The water level in the Mahaicony, Mahaica and Abary Creeks has risen during this period. National Drainage and Irrigation Authority has stop releasing  water from the EDWC through the Mahaica Creek.
