Bridgetown, Barbados, January 12th, 2017 - Today January 12, 2017 marks the 6th anniversary of the magnitude 7.0 earthquake that devastated Haiti. The earthquake affected over 3 million people and claimed up to 150,000 lives.
Earthquakes rank among the highest in potential to cause the most destruction in one event in the Caribbean. Many countries within the Caribbean Region are threatened by future large earthquakes which will occur when strain accumulation on segments of the adjacent tectonic plate boundary exceeds breaking point. To a large extent, the resulting damage will depend on the choice of risk management measures that are implemented to evade or reduce vulnerability to strong ground shaking.
Bridgetown, Barbados, November 16th, 2016 - The Caribbean is not isolated from the impact of man-made and natural disasters, as the impact of Hurricane Matthew demonstrated recently. The Caribbean region’s increasing vulnerability to these threats demands a coordinated approach from its regional organizations. With the aim to improve their current coordination mechanisms and to establish a virtual crisis room, regional experts from the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA), the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA), CARICOM Implementation Agency for Crime and Security (CARICOM IMPACS) and its two subagencies the Regional Intelligence Fusion Centre (RIFC) and the Joint Regional Communication Centre (JRCC) along with the Regional Security System (RSS) converged at a series of workshops.
Bridgetown, Barbados, April 8th, 2016 - The Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) and the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) announced the project “Strengthening Regional Disaster Risk Reduction Strategies and Capacities for Resilience in the Caribbean”, that is supported by the Austrian Development Agency (ADA), during the Disaster Risk Reduction Development Partners Meeting which took place on April 7th, 2016 in Barbados. The purpose of the project is reinforcing disaster risk reduction and creating a resilience culture in the Caribbean.
Bridgetown, Barbados, March 19th, 2016 (CDEMA) - A 6.5 magnitude earthquake was felt by several countries in the Eastern Caribbean early this morning. Antigua and Barbuda, St. Kitts, Nevis, Virgin Islands and Saint Lucia all reported that they felt the earthquake. The Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) made contact with the National Disaster Offices through their Emergency Managers in the Islands who also reported that no damages occurred. Bridgetown, Barbados, March 3rd, 2016 (CDB) - The Community Disaster Risk Reduction Fund (CDRRF) moves into its fourth year of implementation with projections of significant increase in its project portfolio. This, as a result of the decisions made at the recently held Third Project Technical Review Committee (PTRC) meeting where nine of the ten submitted Project Application Documents (PADs) gained favour with the Committee.

Bridgetown, Barbados, August 18th, 2015 (CDRRF) - The CARICOM agenda for reducing risks and building resilience in Caribbean Communities got a much-needed boost recently. Twenty-three disaster risk management and community development professionals from 15 countries gathered at the headquarters of Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) for an intensive five-day workshop on project design and implementation organised by Community Disaster Risk Reduction Fund (CDRRF).

Bridgetown, Barbados, April 8th, 2015 (US Embassy) - In a recent ceremony, the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) inaugurated its new headquarters at Resilience Way in St. Michael. The construction of the CDEMA training facility, regional coordination center, and warehouse for emergency supplies has been financially supported by the government of the United States of America through the United States Southern Command (US/SOUTHCOM).
