CDEMA SITUATION REPORT #17 - EXPLOSIVE ERUPTION AT LA SOUFRIÈRE VOLCANO, ST. VINCENT

SITUATION OVERVIEW

The 6:00PM Scientific Advisory from the UWI Seismic Research Centre (SRC) issued on 18th April, 2021, reported the following:

  • The swarm of long-period and hybrid earthquakes continued at La Soufrière, St Vincen with no significant change in their rate of occurrence. Occasional small volcano-tectonic earthquakes were still being recorded.
  • An episode of explosive activity generated a period of high-level tremor starting at 4:49 pm on 18 April (Figure 1). The resulting eruption plume rose to above 8km and drifted to the south and southwest of the island.
