SITUATION OVERVIEW:
The Under-Secretary-General Jorge Moreira da Silva, Executive Director of the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) led a High-Level visit to Black River, St. Elizabeth, one the areas most affected by the impact of Hurricane Melissa. He was joined on the visit by United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator (RC) with responsibilities for Jamaica, Dennis Zulu and Elizabeth Riley, Executive Director of CDEMA. The High-Level Mission was accompanied by representatives of the Government of Jamaica including the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) and the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF). The visit gave the high-level delegates a first-hand understanding of the devastation experienced by the affected communities and will guide ongoing regional and international support to relief and recovery.
