Haiti Earthquake 2021

RRM in Action - Haiti Earthquake

Just before 8:30am on August 14, 2021, the southwest of Haiti was struck by a 7.2 magnitude earthquake. The epicentre was located 13 km to the South-South-East of Petit Trou de Nippes, in the Departments of Nippes, Grand'Anse and Sud, with a combined population representing around 16% of the country's total population, estimated at 11.4 million. The earthquake, which was at a depth of 10 km, was followed by a number of aftershocks.

As of September 14, 2021, 690,000 persons were impacted, 2,248 were deceased and 12,763 were injured. There was significant property damage with 53,815 homes destroyed and 83,770 homes damaged.

The Regional Coordination Centre was activated on the same day, and a series of actions were taken to support Haiti with the initial relief efforts. Among the actions taken:

Members of the CARICOM Operational Support Team were deployed - funded by the United Kingdom Foreign Commonwealth Development Office.
CDEMA coordinated efforts with the Multi-National Civil Military Coordination Cell
The CU liaised with Jamaica, the North-Western Sub-Region Focal Point
The Multi-National Civil Military Coordination Cell Barbados (MNCCCB) was activated and operated from the CDEMA CU

Guyana Flood 2021

RRM in Action - Guyana Flood

A Tropical Wave embedded within the ITCZ affected Guyana, resulting in heavy rainfall from May into June. Regions 10, 7, 6, 5 and 2 of Guyana were the most impacted by the flooding.

Five (5) Detailed Damage Sectoral Assessment (DDSA) teams were deployed to Guyana to report on the flooding impacts on sectors within the island in the areas of health, mining, agriculture, infrastructure, housing, water, sanitation, shelters and the social sector. The teams are working primarily in Regions 2, 5, 6, 7 and 10. The deployment of the DDSA teams was funded by USAID Eastern and Southern Caribbean through the Caribbean Climate Resilience Initiative which is being implemented by the CDEMA Coordinating Unit.

A presentation of the interim findings was undertaken and the full DDSA report was

completed once the final assessment in the last region has concluded.

La Soufrière 2021

RRM in Action - La Soufrière

On December 29, 2020, the alert level for the La Soufrière volcano in St. Vincent and the Grenadines was elevated to orange following increased seismic activity. CDEMA’s response began, with the activation of the Regional Coordination Plan, Regional Coordination Centre and the Regional Response Mechanism. Preparedness and Coordination were at the core of CDEMA’s support, as technical assistance was provided to authorities in St. Vincent, alongside planning using the Volcano Emergency Plan.

On April 9th, 2021, the first explosive eruption of La Soufrière occurred (since April 13, 1979) which called for mobilization of national, regional and international resources through the Regional Response Mechanism.

CDEMA’s communication with the Government of St. Vincent and the Grenadines allowed for needs to be addressed immediately on the island. Under the Regional Response Mechanism, financing, logistics, health, protection and other elements were coordinated with partners. The Detailed Damage Sectoral Analysis (DDSA) Team, the CARICOM Operation Support Team (COST) and the CARICOM Disaster Relief Unit (CDRU) were mobilized to aid with damage assessments, support to the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) and logistics and relief management.
