On 24th August 2022, the CDEMA Regional Training Centre in collaboration with The University of the West Indies (UWI) Disaster Risk Reduction Centre, and with support from the United Nations Development Programme through the Spotlight Initiative, held a public webinar on integrating Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) and Family Violence (FV) considerations into disaster risk management. The webinar was streamed live via the UWI TV Facebook page.
The webinar introduced participants to "The Guidelines on Integrating Violence Against Women and Girls and Family Violence into Disaster Risk Management in the Caribbean", which was also developed with support from the Spotlight Initiative through a collaboration of the UNDP, CDEMA and partners. It also explored a number of issues related to Gender-Based Violence and DRM in the Caribbean, and how these issues can be addressed.
The presenters were:
- "Guidelines on Integrating Violence Against Women and Girls and Family Violence into Disaster Risk Management in the Caribbean" by Ms. Alicia Mondesire, Consultant to the UNDP on the Guidelines;
- "Gendered Violence and Disaster Risk Management in the Caribbean: Insights from Qualitative Research" by Dr. Halimah Deshong, Senior Lecturer and Head of the Institute for Gender and Development Studies, UWI;
- "The Revised CDEMA System Shelter Management Policy" by Ms. Joanne Persad, Manager Preparedness and Response, CDEMA;
- "Importance of Women's Empowerment in Disaster Management" by Ms. Krystal Yearwood, Research Lead, LeadHERship Institute.
The moderator was Dr. Evangeline Inniss-Springer, Director of the UWI Disaster Risk Reduction Centre.
