The Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency is the new name of regional disaster management body, formerly known as CDERA, the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Response Agency. The change to CDEMA is a CARICOM decision to establish an Agency with a mandate to drive Comprehensive Disaster Management (CDM) in the region.

CDM seeks to pro-actively address all natural and technological hazards and the potential threat of climate change and variability, at each phase of the disaster cycle by engaging all sectors of society – that is public sector, private sector and the general public. The ultimate goal is to achieve regional sustainable development through Comprehensive Disaster Management.

Transitioning to CDEMA on September 1, 2009 has provided the agency with the legal and institutional framework to further the advancement of the CDM agenda.

CDEMA’s mandate now provides for the engagement of a broader range of partnerships and the promotion and facilitation of a CDM approach at regional, national and community levels to develop a culture of disaster loss reduction throughout the Caribbean.

All CARICOM and non CARICOM States of the Caribbean region can become members of CDEMA. There are presently eighteen Participating States and these are: Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Montserrat, St Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, St Vincent and The Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos, Virgin Islands.
