Caribbean Disaster Management Conference: Strengthening Partnerships for Resilience

Montego Bay, Jamaica, December 8, 2010 (CDEMA & ODPEM) - The 5th Annual Caribbean Disaster Management Conference is now underway at the Rose Hall Resort and Spa in Montego Bay.

The Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) in association with its partners and in collaboration with The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) has, on its inaugural day, successfully advanced the disaster management agenda in several critical areas.

The day’s activities highlighted the need for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and the importance of partnerships and looked at DRR in key areas including education, health, gender, business and humanitarian reform.

Nine (9) meetings were sucessfully completed.  The proceedings featured two professional development sessions, covering Business Continuity Management (BCM) for Small Businesses and Disaster Planning and Mitigation and the impact on small island economies.

The BCM meeting engaged a cross section of stakeholders from the small and medium sized business community. The participants generated solutions to ensure preparedness of the region’s businesses to hazards and mitigation against potential threats.

Caribbean businesses operate in an environment that is considered to be one of the most hazardous in the world. BCM is a critical component of the Enhanced Comprehensive Disaster Management Strategy and Framework 2007 to 2012, the regions blueprint for DRR.

Business continuity planning focuses on the ability of a business to recover efficiently and effectively from an unplanned crisis and is instrumental in ensuring the survival of a business during and after an unexpected event.

The conference themed, “CDM: Strengthening Partnerships for Resilience” facilitates resilience building and a multi sectoral approach by bringing together disaster management practitioners from the Caribbean, North, South and Central America, Africa and the Pacific as well partners in the multiple donor organizations.
