BASSETERRE, 12TH August, 2013 – (NEMA) – Enhancing community resilience to disasters continues to be a priority for the Ministry of Homeland Security and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), according to Districts Coordinator, Mrs. Telca Wallace. Consequently, members from select districts in St. Kitts, are to participate in a one week Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training organised by the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency, in conjunction with NEMA. The training will be held at the Sandy Point Community Centre from Monday, August 19th to Friday, August 23rd, beginning at 8am each morning.

NIA, Charlestown, Nevis, May 28, 2013 - The knowledge and technical skills of almost 133 members of the newly trained Community Disaster Response Team from the Sustainable Communities Project, entitled “Building Community Resilience One Community at a Time” were tested through a simulation exercise conducted throughout the island on May 27, 2013.

Organisation of American States, (OAS) through its Special Multilateral Fund for the Inter-American Council for Integral development (FEMCIDI), has proudly sponsored the Disaster Management and Mitigation Project for the island of Nevis. The timely project which was launched on Wednesday,June 9th at the Llewellyn Newton Disaster Management Facility at Long Point comes at a time when Nevis has just entered the beginning of the 2010 hurricane season.
