No unusual volcanic activity at La Soufriere, St. Vincent

St. Augstine, Trinidad and Tobago, March 23, 2011 (SRC) -  The UWI Seismic Research Centre has received reports that a ‘smoke-like’ haze has been observed at La Soufriere volcano in St. Vincent.  Instruments at the Seismic Research Centre do not indicate any change in volcanic seismicity at La Soufriere at this time.

A similar haze has been observed at the volcano in previous years, usually around this time of year.  It is quite likely that this phenomenon may be related to atmospheric changes.  This haze does not signify an impending eruption.

A team from the Soufriere Monitoring Unit (SMU) will be making an expedition to the summit of the volcano early next week for observational purposes.  Following this expedition an update will be issued.

The Seismic Research Centre is the authoritative source of information on earthquakes, volcanoes and tsunamis in the Eastern Caribbean including St. Vincent and the Grenadines.  Additional information on these and other geologic events can be found at
