Community Response Teams in St. Vincent and the Grenadines to be trained

Kingstown, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, August 2nd, 2013 (NEMO) - Community members from villages throughout St. Vincent and the Grenadines will participate in a one week Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training organized by the National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO) in conjunction with the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA). The training will be held at the NEMO’s Conference Room from Monday, August 5 to Friday, August 9, 2013.

The CERT training is supported by the Italian International Centre on Environmental Monitoring (CIMA) Research Foundation through the Enhancing Resilience to Reduce Vulnerability in the Caribbean Region (ERC) Project. Other support also comes from CIDA, UK Aid from DFID, and AUS AID through the CDM-HIP Programme being implemented by CDEMA.

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program provides an opportunity for communities to become more self-reliant in responding to disasters that may affect them. Thirty participants and at least twelve facilitators/supervisors from around the country will take part in this training which seeks to educate community members about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their areas. The supervisors will be persons who have participated in previous CERT trainings conducted by NEMO and CDEMA. Several partners such as the Police and Fire Service and the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Red Cross have committed to supporting the training by facilitating specific areas throughout the week. The CERT programme trains individuals in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. CERT participants for this course will be required to participate in a number of physical outdoor activities.

The training will conclude on Friday, August 9 2013 with a brief closing ceremony.
