NEMO heightens hurricane awareness activites

Today, 1st June marks the beginning of the 2012 Atlantic Hurricane Season. The forecast from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) issued on the 24th of May, 2012, indicates that this year there will be a near-normal hurricane season in the Atlantic Basin. The projection is that there’s a 70 percent chance of nine to 15 named storms, of which four to eight will strengthen to a hurricane and of those one to three will become major hurricanes.

Even though the 2012 Atlantic Basin Hurricane Season is predicted to be near normal, the National Emergency Management Organisation is encouraging the general public to continue to heighten their preparedness activities as we already had two storms formed outside of the official hurricane season. Citizens are reminded that it only takes one landfall of a hurricane, storm or persistent heavy rains for a hurricane season to be described as active in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

As part of the hurricane preparedness programme, NEMO tested its National Telecommunications networks and Emergency Operation Centre capacity during a Telecommunications Exercise called ‘Region Rap 2012’ organized by the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) on, Friday 25th May, 2012.

NEMO will also continue to host a series of activities which began in May to prepare the people of St. Vincent and the Grenadines for the 2012 hurricane season.
