Kingston, Jamaica, October 13th, 2014 (UNISDR) - The Office for Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM), HelpAge International and the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR), conducted today the Caribbean launch of the International Day for Disaster Reduction (IDDR), focused on analyzing the vulnerability and highlight the contributions of older persons related to the disaster risk management.

Kingston, Jamaica, June 30, 2012 ( JIS) - Minister of Local Government and Community Development, Hon. Noel Arscott, says the region must place high priority on the issue of disaster management.

He noted that the Caribbean region is considered to be the second most disaster prone in the world, and revealed that for Jamaica alone, it is conservatively estimated that for the past 10 years, the country has lost $14 billion annually, dealing with damage caused by impact of hazards, such as hurricane and floods.

Kingston, Jamaica, January 26, 2010 (CCRIF) – The Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility (CCRIF) today paid the Government of Haiti US $7,753,579 following the Magnitude 7.0 earthquake which struck close to Port-au-Prince on 12 January, causing damage of catastrophic proportions. This represents the full amount due to the country based on its catastrophe insurance policy for earthquakes for the 2009/10 policy year, and which forms part of the country’s disaster risk management strategy. This value represents approximately 20 times the premium of US$385,500.
