Disaster Risk Management training - Region 8 - Potaro/Siparuni

Georgetown, Guyana , June 24th, 2013 (CDC) - The Civil Defence Commission (CDC) continues to extend its mandate of promoting Disaster Risk Management (DRM) across Guyana. During the second half of 2012 (July – December) the CDC conducted DRM training with representatives from six (06) of the ten (10) administrative regions of Guyana. The representatives from regions 1, 3,4,6,7 and 10 benefited from training in Shelters and Shelter Management, Damage Assessment and Needs Analysis (DANA), and Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) Management. Four hundred and twelve persons gained immensely from these training. The CDC is now poised to complete the regional DRM training with the remaining four (04) administrative regions (2, 5, 8, and 9) during the period June – August, 2013.

 

During the period June 16-23, 2013 Region #8 (Potaro/Siparuni) was targeted for DRM training, this resulted in the CDC training team travelling to Mahdia to conduct a one week period of training. The representatives from the region were trained in Shelters and Shelter Management, Damage Assessment and Needs Analysis (DANA), and Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) Management. Additionally, the Director General CDC, Colonel (retired) Chabilall Ramsarup, MSM, handed over the Emergency Operations Box to Mr. Mark Crawford, Regional Chairman Region eight (08). This box contains copies of the national and regional maps, emergency operation states, along with other resources needed for the quick setting up of a functional Regional Emergency Operations Centre (REOC) whenever the need arise.

These sessions were facilitated by instructors from the Commission and its Volunteer Corps including, Major Kester R. Craig, Captain Sean F. Welcome, Captain Althea Daniels-Stuart and Warrant Officer Class One (retired) Carlton Semple. Eighteen (18) persons were trained as Shelter Managers; eighteen (18) persons were trained in Damage Assessment and Needs Analysis while twenty one (21) persons were trained as Emergency Operations Centre Managers.

Similar workshops will be conducted in Region Nine (09), Upper Takutu/Upper Essequibo during the period July 6-14, 2013.
