Tortola, British Virgin Islands, August 29, 2008, (DDM) - On July 28th 2008, the Department of Disaster Management opened their doors to 9 children who would participate in their first ever Summer Exploration Programme. The programme was tailored for children between the ages of 12 and 16 in an effort to further educate them in the concepts of Disaster Management. According to Director of DDM Ms. Sharleen DaBreo, “when we conduct school campaigns we usually target primary school aged children. This Summer Programme and the Geological Hazards Handbook for Secondary Schools, which is scheduled to be completed this year, are two efforts to reach pre-teens and teenagers.”

Tortola, British Virgin Islands, August 27, 2008, (DDM) - The Operations Group of the National Emergency Operations Center took part in a table top exercise yesterday at DDM’s Conference Room to test the revisions made to the National Disaster Management Plan. The Operations Group is comprised of members of the Public Works Department, Ministry of Health, BVI Health Authority, BVI Electricity Department, BVI Red Cross, Water and Sewerage Department, Royal Virgin Islands Police Force, Fire and Rescue Service and the DDM. The responsibility of the Operations Group is to oversee national efforts undertaken by responders immediately following a hazard impact. This is done through the coordination of efforts to save lives, protect property and stabilize the incident.

Tortola, British Virgin Islands, July 17, 2008, (DDM) – Premier and Minister of Finance Honourable Ralph T. O’Neal, OBE on Tuesday received a courtesy call from Coordinator of the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Response Agency (CDERA), Mr. Jeremy Collymore.

In their brief inter-change, Mr. Collymore informed the Premier of the decision to rename the agency to the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency.
