Tortola,Virging Islands (UK) October 13, 2009 (DDM) - The Department of Disaster Management (DDM) is inviting the Territory to join in the observance of International Day of Disaster Reduction (IDDR) on Wednesday, 14th October under the theme, “Hospitals Safe from Disasters”.

Every 2nd Wednesday in October, countries around the world join the United Nations in launching campaigns to raise awareness, mobilize action and implement practices to reduce loss of life, as well as social and environmental damage as a result of disasters.

Tortola, Virgin Islands (UK), September 1, 2009 (GIS) – Premier Honourable Ralph T. O’Neal, OBE has welcomed the change in name for the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Response Agency (CDERA) to the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) which became effective today, September 1.

The change has been long in coming and according to a CDEMA Press Release, it “represents the concretization of an organizational transition and strategic shift in focus from disaster preparedness and response to comprehensive disaster management.”

Tortola, British Virgin Islands, July 21, 2009 (DDM)– According, to reports issued by the Puerto Rico Seismic Network, an earthquake was felt throughout Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands this afternoon. An earthquake measuring a magnitude of 4.6 on the Richter scale was felt throughout Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands at approximately 3:00pm on Tuesday, July 21th. The report indicated that the epicenter was located near 19.26 north latitude and 64.77 west longitude, or 75 KM North East of Anegada, at a depth of 21 kilometers.

Tortola,Virgin Islands, June 04, 2009 (Department of Disaster Management)– The National Disaster Management Council (NDMC) convened its annual meeting today, chaired by His Excellency the Governor David Pearey at the Maria’s By The Sea Hotel’s Conference Room. The agenda included reports from the various subcommittees, presentations on the April 2nd National Simulation Exercise and the level of preparedness of the Territory for the 2009 Atlantic hurricane season. Of particular interest was the presentation on the VI Comprehensive Disaster Management Policy and Strategy, which was recently approved by Cabinet.
