Tortola, VI, October 11th, 2012 (DDM) - The Virgin Islands will join the rest of the world in observing International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDR) on Friday, October 12, under the theme “Step Up for Disaster Risk Reduction”.

IDDR is a day which encourages every citizen and government to take part in building more disaster resilient communities and nations. It is a day to celebrate how people and communities are reducing their risk to disaster and raising awareness about the importance of Disaster Risk Reduction. The Step Up initiative started in 2011 and each year has been focusing on difference group of partners. This year we will recognise the contribution of Women and Girls the [in]Visible Force of resilience.

Government of BVI (GIS), BVI, October 5th, 2012 - Premier and Minister of Finance Dr. the Honourable D. Orlando Smith, OBE today presented Executive Director of the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) with a Virgin Islands coin set to show his appreciation for Mr. Collymore’s contribution to the Territory’s disaster management regime, in addition to his contributions throughout the region. Yesterday, Mr. Collymore made the official handover of the planning database, a system for collecting and monitoring development applications, to Premier Smith.

Government of BVI (GIS), BVI, October 5th, 2012 - Now that the Planning Database has been officially handed over to the Government of the Virgin Islands, the Territory will benefit from an improved development application process, and ultimately better coordinated physical development throughout the islands.
