DDM announces a new Technical Planning Officer

Tortola, VI, May 10, 2010 (DDM) - The Department of Disaster Management is announcing the appointment of Ms. Garymar De' Rivera Rivera to the post of Technical Planning Officer (TPO). Ms. Rivera, a native of Puerto Rico, has been assigned to the Department’s Mitigation and Planning Programme and will support the Senior Technical Planning Manager (STMP), Ms. Cynthia Rolli.



Director of DDM Ms. Sharleen DaBreo said, “We are delighted to have Garymar join our team at the DDM, especially considering her strong background in geology and remote sensing.  She will also be a tremendous asset t to the Public Information and Education Programme as she is a Spanish speaker and will assist in translating a number of our documents to enhance the educating of our Spanish speaking community.”

The functions of the TPO involve capturing and updating existing hazard data within our national GIS hazard database, undertaking field assessments to support the planning and development process in the Territory, and evaluating the potential impacts from natural hazards on our critical infrastructure. The TPO will also provide assistance in developing solutions and mitigation plans that can be implemented to prevent significant impact from natural hazards.

Ms Rivera's technical background will complement the DDM’s efforts towards implementing a number of Disaster Risk Management initiatives through the European Union funded 4.9 million Euro, 3 year project being implemented through the United National Development Programme (UNDP). This project will serve seven UK and Dutch Overseas Countries and Territories in the Caribbean.  Ms. Riveria’s expertise in Remote Sensing methodologies will also allow the BVI to benefit significantly from the Caribbean Satellite Disaster Project which is based on the use of satellite data.

Ms Rivera holds a Bachelor's Degree in Geology from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaquez and a Masters Degree in Geological Science from the University of Texas.  She is currently assigned to the DDM on a 2 year contract.
