PAHO Technical Working Group meets in BVI to develop self assessment tool

Tortola, British Virgin Islands, August 14, 2008, (DDM) - Seven members of a technical working group met in the BVI from the 13th to the 14th August 2008 at the Department of Disaster Management to develop a Health Disaster Management Self Assessment Tool.

The meeting was organized by the Pan American Health Organization under the "Strengthening Communities through Safer Health Facilities in the Caribbean Project" which is funded by the European Commission for Humanitarian Aid and managed by Mrs. Joyce Thomas-Peters.

The self assessment tool includes a number of benchmarks, standards and indicators that can be used by Ministries of Health in all PAHO member states to assess the effectiveness of National Health Disaster Management programmes. It is expected that the tool would be shared with the Health Disaster Coordinators and then piloted before it is available for use.

In addition to Mrs. Thomas-Peters the members of the team include: Dr. Dana Van Alphen PAHO Regional Disaster Management Advisor for Latin American Caribbean, Mrs. Sandra Charter-Rolle from Dominica, Mr. Osbert Charles from Grenada, Agustin Compton from St. Lucia and Ms. Sharleen DaBreo Director, Disaster Management in the BVI.
