CDEMA to share experiences on regional comprehensive disaster management strategy at African risk management conference in Uganda

Bridgetown, Barbados, October 30, 2009 (CDEMA) - Jeremy Collymore, Executive Director of the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency, CDEMA (formerly CDERA) will speak on the Caribbean disaster management experience at the Regional Conference on Comprehensive Disaster Risk Reduction and Management in Kampala Uganda on November, 1-6, 2009.

Collymore, one of the key speakers, will provide an overview of CDEMA’s advocated Comprehensive Disaster Management (CDM) approach which has been adopted by CARICOM Governments since 2001. He will be looking at the process and challenges in the development and implementation of CDM and lessons identified.

CDM is an integrated and proactive approach to managing disaster risk and focuses on all hazards, all phases of disasters and all sectors of society. The 2007-2012 CDM strategy and programming framework has been embraced by the region as a roadmap for building resilience to hazards within the 18 CDEMA Participating States. This results based programming agenda facilitates harmonization among key development partners and institutions, and incorporates the latest regional and international thinking on and approaches to, disaster management.

The Conference is jointly sponsored by the Government of Uganda and the Commonwealth Secretariat. It will bring together senior government officials who are responsible for Disaster Management, National Development and Economic Policy Planning as well as senior local government officials from across the African region. Key speakers will come from Africa and around the commonwealth.

CDEMA’s Executive Director emphasized that “This Conference provides an opportunity for Small Islands Development States (SIDS) and Lesser Developed Countries (LDCs) to share experiences and consider strategies for managing one of the biggest threats to our development and that is hazard impacts and their potential amplification by climate change.”

CDEMA’s participation at the Meetings is being facilitated through the Commonwealth Secretariat.
