NEMA Receives Long Service Award at Inaugural CDEMA Awards Programme

Nassau, Bahamas, December 6th, 2015 (BIS) – The Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency officially launched the CDEMA Awards Programme at the Closing Ceremony, Awards & Gala Dinner of the 9th Caribbean Conference on Comprehensive Disaster Management, December 3, 2015 at Melia Nassau Beach Resort.

Captain Stephen Russell, Director of the National Emergency Management Agency headed the list of Long Service Awards by receiving the CDEMA Gold Star of Merit for his 23 years in disaster management in The Bahamas.

Jeremy MacArthur Collymore, former executive director of CDEMA received the CDEMA Council Award for his dedication and commitment to the advancement of comprehensive disaster management throughout the region and globally.

The CDEMA Awards Programme was officially launched by Ronald Jackson, Executive Director of CDEMA; the objective to recognize individuals instrumental in the development and advancement of disaster management throughout the region.

Other NEMA staff members receiving awards: the Silver Award to Chrystal Glinton, First Assistant Secretary; Wendell Rigby, Logistics Officer; and Eleanor Davis, Administrative Cadet each for 16 years of service. The Bronze Award to Gayle Outten-Moncur Senior Assistant Secretary/Operations Manager for 13 years of service and to Luke Bethel, Training Officer for 12 years of service.

Captain Russell thanked NEMA staff for their hard work and dedication over the years to disaster management in the country and for working with CDEMA team in organizing the 9th CDM conference.

At the closing night’s ceremony, the Hon Arnold Forbes, Minister of State for Public Works and Urban Development underscored the importance of the work of CDEMA and the need for Participating States to support the organization, financially.

He commended Executive Director Jackson and his team who came to The Bahamas to assess the damage caused by the category 4 Hurricane Joaquin to the Central and Southeast islands.

“They were on the ground to address the needs and to ensure that The Bahamas bounced back as quickly as possible. Their response was quick and effective,” Mr Forbes said.

The Hon. Adriel Brathwaite, Attorney General and Minister of Home Affairs, Barbados, and Chairman of the CDEMA Council of Ministers in his presentation of Conference Outcomes noted that the key to regional survival is to bind together to tackle the issues confronting the Participating States.

The closing ceremony included entertainment by the Royal Bahamas Defence Force dance band, a Junkanoo Rush-out and an elaborate buffet dinner.
