DDM participates in Carib Wave Exercise

The Valley, Anguilla, February 25th, 2014 (Department of Disaster Management) - Anguilla will join other countries in the Caribbean to participate in a tsunami response exercise on Wednesday March 26th 2014.

The exercise has been modeled by the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration National Weather Service (NOAA NWS) Caribbean Tsunami Warning Programme, and is titled “Caribe Wave 2014.” This exercise will provide simulated tsunami messages from the Tsunami Warning Centre (TWC) based on a hypothetical magnitude 8.5 earthquake located approximately 270 km off of Portugal at 36.04ºN, 10.75ºW, which requires implementation of the tsunami response plan.

The Department of Disaster Management (DDM) states that exercises like this will help ensure that residents and visitors of Anguilla are ready to respond in the event of an impending tsunami.

The purpose of the exercise is to improve the Tsunami Warning System effectiveness by providing an opportunity for the disaster management system along with the private sector to exercise their operational lines of communications, review tsunami response procedures, and promote tsunami preparedness.

The exercise will be facilitated by the DDM and it is expected to attract a cross section of representatives from the Government Ministries, Police, Boat Captains, Education Department, Tourism players and other non-governmental organizations at the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) and other areas. Some scenarios will be thrown out. If a tsunami heads for Anguilla, what decisions will the sectors take? What precautions do we need to take?

Through this exercise and ongoing activities, key stakeholders and other residents on Anguilla will be sensitized as to the awareness and impacts of tsunamis. The DDM will intensify its awareness and sensitization efforts by posting relevant information on its website, social media feeds, electronic and print media and through direct appeals to the public via TV and radio.

Persons wishing to participate in this exercise should contact the DDM at 497 2926 for registration and guidance.
