Between the 29th December 2020 and 7th April 2021, the alert level for the La Soufrière volcano in St. Vincent and the Grenadines had been elevated to Orange as a result of increased activity and an ongoing effusive eruption.
On 29th December 2020 the alert level for the La Soufrière volcano in St Vincent and the Grenadines was elevated to Orange because of increased activity at the site. The volcano has had an effusive eruption, with visible gas and steam eruption and the formation of a new volcanic dome. The volcano continues to exude magma on the surface and gas emissions can be observed from the Belmont Observatory. A UWI Seismic Research Centre team is currently in St Vincent to support monitoring and data collection and analysis.
Bridgetown, Barbados March 26th, 2021 (CDEMA) – The CDEMA Coordinating Unit is moving forward with plans for a National Relief and Logistics Management Plan and Policy following a two-week workshop facilitating the planning process. Workshop discussions formed a critical part of drafting the policy to enhance logistics and humanitarian response across the region.

Bridgetown, Barbados March 17th, 2021 (CDEMA) - The CDEMA Coordinating Unit is hosting a two-week workshop with disaster management personnel in preparation for the development of the National Relief and Logistics Management Plan and Policy. The existing multi-hazard environment has created a need for clear policy directives, supported by legislation, to strengthen humanitarian response across the region.

The Caribbean Safe School Initiative (CSSI) Virtual Pre-Ministerial Forum opened on March 15, 2021 under the theme Regional Review on School Safety in the context of Systemic Risk. More than 20 countries and territories as well as multilateral agencies and other partners attended the event that addresses the Caribbean’s response to economic, human, natural and health crisis in the education sector.

The Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) received financing from the European Union towards the cost of implementation of a project “11th EDF Natural Disaster Facility in the CARIFORUM “Caribbean Regional Indicative Programme”. CDEMA intends to apply a portion of the proceeds of this financing to eligible payments under a contract for which this invitation is issued. The objective of the Consultancy is to undertake an assessment to determine strategies for advancing the CDM Blueprint implementation in nine (9) CDEMA PS. The Consultancy will also facilitate high-level consultations and the design of interventions to address the barriers.

Bridgetown, Barbados, March 4th, 2021 – The CDEMA Coordinating Unit has officially deployed Superintendent Sylvan McIntyre of Grenada to assist authorities in St. Vincent and the Grenadines with the effusive eruption at the La Soufriere Volcano. Commencing March 1, 2021, Superintendent McIntyre will spend six weeks supporting the national disaster office with the ongoing volcano crisis under the Regional Response Mechanism (RRM).
