CDEMA Situation Report #3 - Hurricane Irma - as of 9:00pm on September 8th, 2017

MESSAGE: Irma is currently a category 4 hurricane now moving into the Bahamas. Irma made direct landfall over the Turks and Caicos on Thursday September 07, 2017 with heavy rainfall and recorded wind-speeds of 150 mph and greater. Jose remains a dangerous category 4 hurricane as it moves closer to the Northern Leeward Islands.

EVENT:

On Friday September 08, 2017 at 800 PM EDT (0000 UTC), the eye of Hurricane Irma was located near latitude 22.2 North, longitude 77.2 West. Irma is moving towards the west near 12 mph (19 km/h), and a turn toward the northwest is expected by late Saturday. Maximum sustained winds are near 155 mph (250 km/h) with higher gusts. Irma is a category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 70 miles (110 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 185 miles (295 km).

The AHA Centre offers Deepest Sympathy to Hurricane-Affected People in the Caribbean

As a region that has its share of disasters, we share the pain of the people in the Caribbean, when the category-5 Hurricane Irma went through the Caribbean, and made its first landfall in the north-east Caribbean islands on Wednesday, 6th September 2017.

On behalf of the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on disaster management (AHA Centre), please acceptour deepest sympathies to those who have lost their loved ones and those who have been affected by the hurricane Irma.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Hotline number established by the United Kingdom (UK) Office in Barbados to deal with requests for evacuation by EU Nationals

A Hotline number has been activated for European Union (EU) citizens to call for assistance with evacuation from any of the impacted States. The number is 0207 008 0000.

It is advised that persons call the Hotline number as this was specifically established to deal with this situation.

MESSAGE: Powerful category 5 Hurricane Irma continues to impact CDEMA Participating States while Hurricane Jose poses threat to Northern Leeward Islands.

EVENT:

On Thursday September 07, 2017 at 800 PM EDT (0000 UTC), the eye of Hurricane Irma was located near latitude 21.1 North, longitude 71.8 West. Irma is moving toward the west-northwest near 16 mph (26 km/h), and this general motion is expected to continue for the next couple of days with some decrease in forward speed.

CDEMA Stands in Solidarity with Countries Affected by Hurricane Irma

Bridgetown, Barbados , September 7th, 2017 - The Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA), as the CARICOM entity established to oversee disaster management within the region, stands in solidarity with our affected Caribbean neighbours. The Regional Response Mechanism (RRM) has been activated to provide support during this greatest time of need.

The impact of Hurricane Irma on several of CDEMA Participating States including Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, the British Virgin Islands, Dominica, St Kitts and Nevis and Montserrat has also moved many of our fellow Caribbean citizens, private sector and the diaspora to reach out to the CDEMA Coordinating Unit (CU) with offers of assistance for the disaster relief efforts.
