Japanese embassy acknowledges IDDR Day

The Embassy of Japan would like to once more express its appreciation for the numerous warm messages and support that it received from the Governments and Peoples of the CARICOM Member States in the aftermath of this disaster.

Through the experience of the Great East Japan Earthquake, Japan was forced to realise again that “Disaster Reduction” is crucial to achieving a sustainable society. Japan has experienced several disasters and yet, each time, the country has achieved reconstruction.

Japan is taking advantage of these experiences and has been actively cooperating, both regionally and internationally, in the field of disaster reduction. In July 2012, Japan held “the World Ministerial Conference on Disaster Reduction in Tohoku” and invited several experts from all over the world to share its experiences in this field.

In the Caribbean, Japan, together with the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA), implemented the “Caribbean Disaster Management Project,” which focused on mitigating the impact of flood disasters. Phase 2 of this project was completed in June 2012.

Through this project, a new system consisting of the three components of: “Flood Hazard Mapping,” “Flood early warning system” and “Integrating Community-based disaster management planning” were established. This community-centred system is a practical one and focuses on protecting the life of each community member from flood disasters. The Embassy of Japan expects this system will be expanded to all flood vulnerable communities in the Caribbean. The Embassy would like to continue cooperating with CDEMA and other regional Disaster Prevention Agencies in this regard.

It is the hope of the Embassy, that on this International Day of Disaster Reduction, the peoples of the world reflect on the importance of disaster reduction. The Embassy would like to continue working with CARICOM Member States towards the creation of a world free from disasters.
