7th CDM Conference: Belling the Cat: UK-AID calls for more accountability in regional resilience planning and spending

We have got to be much more holistic, looking at links to climate change and livelihoods, underscoring these as development issues.”The Disaster Risk Management consultant spoke during the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA)’s 7th Caribbean Conference on Comprehensive Disaster Management on December 3.The conference is on at the Hilton Rose Hall, Montego Bay, Jamaica from December 3rd – 7th, 2012, convened under the theme: “CDM: Building Disaster Resilience – A Shared Responsibility.”According to Bellens, DIFDs budget for disaster mitigation has been raised from 10 per cent to 30 per cent.“It is our hope that the investments which are being made into disaster reduction on the ground leads to change. We are trying to persuade others to invest more in risk reduction. The only way we are going to do that is to show it works,” he stated.The UK governments Department for International Development (DFID) leads Britain’s fight against global poverty, delivering 77 billion pounds sterling in UK AID to more than 60 countries around the worked in 2010/2011, including emergency response after disasters.DFID’s contribution to CDEMA’s Harmonised Implementation programme (HIP, joint with CIDA and AusAID) supports national programmes that result in safer communities and more resilient communities in the Caribbean.
