Training of Facilitators Workshop on Community based Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction Programnme

Bridgetown, Barbados, January 18, 2011 (CDEMA) – The first of two three (3) day Sub-Regional Training of Facilitators Workshop on Community based Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction Programnme will be convened at the Cascadia Hotel and conference Centre, Port of Spain, Trinidad from Tuesday January 25th to Thursday January 27th, 2011.  

The workshop is being convened by CDEMA and hosted by the Trinidad and Tobago Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM) through the support of the Austrian Development Agency’s funded, “Mainstreaming Climate Change into Disaster Risk Management for the Caribbean Region (CCDM)” project.  

Participants attending this workshop are from the CDEMA Participating States and comprise community facilitators and persons working with community groups  to develop disaster risk reduction or community development plans.
Through the execution of this Project, a Model Community-based Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction Programme and Tools have been developed.  The Tools include a Module on Climate Change Adaptation and accompanying Participants` and Facilitators Handbooks.

This Workshop aims to: Develop a cadre of trainers who would deliver the Programme and Tools in communities across the region; Build capacity in community, climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction and; Enable participants to undertake community training in the Module on Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) for communities with supporting Handbooks and other resource materials.  

The Caribbean Natural Resources Institute (CANARI) will facilitate this participatory, highly engaging and practical training Workshop which will also involve Field applications in the Matura Community in Trinidad.

The “Mainstreaming Climate Change into Disaster Risk Management for the Caribbean Region (CCDM)” project targets groups especially vulnerable to climate change and disaster utilizing gender-sensitive and participatory methods.  A number of regional institutions, including the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC), the Caribbean Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (CIMH), the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRCS) and the Caribbean Policy Development Centre (CPDC) are key partners in the implementation of this project.

The next sub-regional workshop for community facilitators will be held in Jamaica.
