Tsunami Ready Anguilla

This is being done through the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) Caribbean early warning systems and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Weather Service (NWS) Caribbean Pilot Project for the Regional Implementation of the TsunamiReady Program.  The TsunamiReady Program, developed by the National Weather Service, is designed to help cities, towns, counties, universities and other large sites in coastal areas reduce the potential for disastrous tsunami-related consequences.  In the United States since June 20, 2001, TsunamiReady has helped community leaders and emergency managers strengthen their local operations. TsunamiReady communities are better prepared to save lives through better planning, education and awareness. Communities have fewer fatalities and property damage if they plan before a tsunami arrives. No community is tsunami proof, but TsunamiReady can help minimize loss to your community.

The Department of Disaster Management is launching a month-long island-wide awareness campaign of the Tsunami hazard.  Some of the activities will include an awareness tent at the people’s market Thursday 1st September from 2 to 5pm and again the next Thursday outside the Anguilla National Trust Building.  The Department will also be out this Friday afternoon 2nd September doing a “Whistle Stop” from Blowing Point Village through South Hill and on to the Valley and repeating the “Whistle Stop” on the 9th September from Welches through Sandy Hill and on to the Valley.   As well as radio and TV interviews, town hall and community meetings.  A Tsunami Evacuation Map has been produced for Anguilla and will be part of the awareness campaign.

Director of Disaster Management, Miss Melissa Meade states “We look forward to the participation of all residents and visitors in this preparedness effort to ensure we are aware and are prepared.”

If you would like more information on Tsunamis, other coastal or natural hazards likely to affect Anguilla please do not hesitate to call the department on 497-2926 during normal working hours.
