CDEMA leads CARICOM technical experts mission to Brazil

Bridgetown, Barbados, November 10, 2011 (CDEMA) – CDEMA’s Executive Director, Jeremy Collymore is leading a CARICOM mission to Brazil to hold discussions on disaster risk reduction initiatives. The team of technical experts began the one week mission on Monday, 7 November aimed at exploring areas of strengthening cooperation in disaster risk management between the CARICOM States and Brazil. Other members of the CARICOM team are Dr. Barbara Carby, Director, Disaster Risk Reduction Centre of the University of the West Indies; Dr. Thomas Edward, Lecturer at the University of the West Indies, Mr. Adrian Trotman, Agrometerologist of the Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology (CIMH); and Mrs. Velda Octave-Joseph, Community Planning Specialist, CDEMA.

During the visit, the team will meet with senior officials from several key disaster management and other relevant agencies. These include the Ministry of Science and Technology; the National Secretariat for Civil Defense; the Centre for Social Studies and Research in Disaster; the Ministry of Cities - Department of Urban Affairs and Risk Prevention; and the Ministry of Social Development and Fight against Hunger.  They will also participate in the National Seminar on Civil Protection on Friday, 11 November

The focus of discussions will be on exchange approaches and the technical expertise and tools available by Brazil and CARICOM States on various aspects of disaster risk reduction. The CARICOM team will also share key initiatives being undertaken by their respective agencies.

The Government of Brazil has recently made available to CDEMA through its Cooperation Programme US$999,500.00 for strengthening Disaster Risk Management in the Rural Sector of the CARICOM States. These funds are being disbursed through the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) under the initiative “Latin America and the Caribbean Against Hunger 2025.”  

The funds provided are supporting the development of a drought monitoring and management programme; a schools safety programme, tertiary student engagement in disaster reduction through internships, exchanges and research among other areas.

The mission will culminate with a wrap-up session with the Minister of External Relations, Mr. Milton Rondó, to discuss future areas of cooperation on disaster risk management between the Government of Brazil and the CARICOM States.
