NEMO & OECS Secretariat to host Consultation on Draft Harmonised Approval for Integrating Disaster Risk Reduction into OECS Natural Environmental Management Strategies 1st February, 2012

The objectives of this stakeholders’ consultation are to:

  • Familiarize stakeholders with the draft harmonized protocol that would be utilized in Caribbean countries in:
  1. The conduct of assessments aimed at disaster risk management and hazard vulnerability reduction at the national and regional level;
  2. Integration of disaster management/risk reduction approaches in OECS and National Environmental Management Strategies.
  • To present current national strategies, programmes, activities regarding environmental and disaster management, their links, and mutual needs for coordination and information exchange.
  • To design a draft harmonized protocol for general disaster management that includes environmental and gender issues among others.
  • To identify responsibilities and benefits for implementing the protocol.

The OECS Member States have noted the linkages between Environmental Impact Assessment (EIAs) and disaster management and climate change at various consultations. National and regional agencies have also recognized the need to cross reference EIA processes and tools with vulnerability and post disaster assessment instruments. They have recommended that climate change and disaster management personnel should be involved in EIA management and that the capacity of such personnel to deal with environmental management issues be strengthened.

The consultation will take place on Wednesday February 01, 2012 from 9 a.m. to 1:00 pm at NEMO’s Conference Room, Old Montrose. Arturo Lopez Portillo Contreras, Disaster Risk Reduction Specialist will lead the sessions.
