CDEMA Partners declare commitment to 8th Caribbean Conference on CDM


Attending the ceremony were members of the diplomatic corps, international agencies, development partners, private sector and representatives from government ministries. Remarks provided by two partners, the Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility (CCRIF) and UNDP highlighted the vital role of partnerships for CDM. United Nations Resident Coordinator and Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme Dr. Arun Kashyap commended the Agency on the appropriateness of this year’s theme and its focus on the critical relationship between development and disaster risk. Reinforcing the importance of relationships Dr. Kashyap noted that “CDM builds upon learning from each other in terms of good practices to integrate disaster risk reduction in inclusive development as well as ensuring that all stakeholders work together and contribute their efforts in meeting the national common vision and priorities.”

CCRIF’s representative Ms. Elizabeth Emmanuel, reaffirmed their commitment to the conference stating “We firmly support the goal of these annual conferences to improve disaster risk management awareness and to exchange information and good practices while building stronger professional networks not only among disaster management officers throughout the region but also including representatives of the financial , insurance environment and meteorological communities, and private sector as we all have a part to play in national and regional disaster management that contribute to sustainable and climate resilient development.”

In discussing things to come for this year’s conference, Mr. Ronald Jackson, Executive Director of CDEMA, announced that the region is now embarking on its Third Regional Strategy on Comprehensive Disaster Management (CDM 3) which will be officially launched at the Conference. He also indicated that the 2013 Conference will further facilitate the development of the business case for greater investment in DRM. Mr. Jackson expressed gratitude to the many perennial partners and local (Jamaica) private sector companies for their support in the three years the conference has been held in Jamaica and looked forward to a successful 8th Conference.
