Purpose of the workshop is to give participants an overview of the concepts of climate change and the adoptive measures that can be considered for The Bahamas.
Participants will review the draft Comprehensive Disaster Management (CDM) Country Work Programme for The Bahamas with a focus on enhancing the document.
About 30 participants from the Bahamas Environment Scientific Technology (BEST) Commission, Government ministries including the Ministry of Finance and Planning, the Bahamas Water and Sewerage Corporation, the environmental health division, Office of Gender Affairs, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and development agencies will participate in the workshop.
The workshop is supported through the Austrian Development Agency (ADA) funded Mainstreaming Climate Change in Disaster Management in the Caribbean Phase II (CCDM II)Project and the Comprehensive Disaster Management – Harmonised Implementation Programme (CDM-HIP) funded by Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) and the UK Department for International Development (DFID).
It is one of a series being held in CDEMA Participating States for personnel with responsibility for crafting the country disaster management work programme. These workshops are designed to build awareness of the climate change phenomenon in the Caribbean and provide practical, hands on support in the crafting of CDM country work programmes that integrate climate change and gender considerations.
Facilitators from NEMA and CDEMA will highlight in their presentations the socio-economic projects for development in The Bahamas, information on the primary hazards affecting The Bahamas and examine the factors that promote vulnerability in the Caribbean.
Facilitators will also examine the types of hazards faced by the Caribbean region and definition of key terms including the comprehensive disaster management; climate variability and change, mitigation and adaptation will also be shared.
