Documentary on disaster risk reduction in the Caribbean airs tonight on CaribVision television

Comprehensive Disaster Management (CDM) provides a strategic roadmap for making the Caribbean people safe from the hazards they live with and climate related events. It is about building resilient communities and countries to safeguard live, properties and livelihoods. 18 Caribbean countries have adopted this approach since 2001.

“CDM at Work” is a snapshot of practical ways this is being advanced in the region.

The documentary explains what national governments are doing and need to do, to shift the focus from hurricanes and reacting to an event, to being pro-active and addressing in a holistic way, the management of all hazards that are a threat to the development of their countries. All sectors need to consider CDM as part of their sustainability planning and this is demonstrated in the approach being taken by the Agricultural sector in many Caribbean states. CDM is everybody’s business and the residents of Bioche and Fond Cole in Dominica show how seriously this is taken in their communities.

Financial support for the documentary has been provided by the United Kingdom’s Department for International Development (DFID), Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD) and Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) under the Comprehensive Disaster Management - Harmonised Implementation Programme (CDM-HIP).

The Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) is the regional institution charged with promoting and supporting countries in the implementation of CDM.”

CDEMA expresses thanks to the donors and to all its partners, stakeholders and all the other persons who contributed to the making of the CDM at Work.
