Trincity, Tacarigua, January 24th, 2013, (ODPM) - The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM) in collaboration with the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre has launched its 3rd Annual National Primary Schools Quiz in January 2013. Students have already started to become disaster ready by preparing essays in which they identify ways of preparing themselves and families in the event of a disaster. These essays will be judged by a panel of experts and eight schools will be chosen to participate in the final round on Tuesday 26th February 2013.
Approximately, more than two hundred (200) schools have been provided with study guides with material on Hurricanes, Earthquakes, Tsunamis, Flooding and Fires and the material is also available online. This is one of the innovative methods the ODPM has employed to motivate students and in turn their families to use simple yet effective strategies to make their homes, schools and communities safer and more resilient. First Place winners will receive a five thousand (5000) dollar prize for their school and the 2nd and 3rd place teams will also receive monetary prizes of three thousand $3000.00 and two thousand $2000.00 dollars respectively. Students will also get individual prizes for placing in the top three (3) schools.
The deadline for registering and submitting essays is January 31st 2013.
Interested schools are asked to check ODPM’s website – www.odpm.gov.tt for more information on registration.
