Comprehensive Disaster Management Conference Streaming Live on ODPEM Website

Montego Bay,Jamaica,December 8, 2009 (ODPEM, CDEMA) - History has been made at the fourth Caribbean Conference on Comprehensive Disaster Management (CDM) with its first live online broadcast. From now until Thursday December 10, 2009 persons will be able to view the conference live on www.odpem.org.jm . With an audience interactive chat feature streamers can now communicate in real time using social networks, Facebook, Twitter and Ustream.

ODPEM and CDEMA advancing Comprehensive Disaster Management

Montego Bay, Jamaica, December 7, 2009 (ODPEM, CDERA) - The fourth Caribbean Conference on Comprehensive Disaster Management (CDM) has, on its inaugural day, successfully advanced the disaster management agenda in several critical areas. Twelve (12) meetings were held on the opening day. The day’s activities highlighted the need for disaster risk reduction (DRR) regionally and looked at DRR in key areas including education, health, law, tourism and business.

CDEMA remembers November 2007 Caribbean Sea Earthquake

CDEMA Staff evacuates building during Exercise Shake-UpBridgetown, Barbados, November 27, 2009 (CDEMA) - Staff at the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (formerly CDERA) could be seen taking cover under desks and holding on during an earthquake exercise conducted today (November 27) at the Coordinating Unit in Barbados.

Andria Grosvenor, CDEMA, Programme Manager (Ag.) said, “ Exercise Shake-up” had a twofold purpose, to commemorate the November 2007 Caribbean Earthquake which was a strong reminder of the region’s exposure to the threat of earthquakes and for the Staff of CDEMA to practise safety actions and procedures during an earthquake event.”

“The earthquake of November 29, 2007 was experienced by thousands in twelve of the CDEMA Participating States and has increased the awareness of the hazard in States where many people believed that they were safe from earthquakes. We hope that countries across the region will observe this event annually on the last Friday of November to promote earthquake awareness and safety,” she added

Flash flood situation creates dangerous driving conditions in the Virgin Islands

Tortola, Virgin Islands, November 16, 2009 (DDM) - At 9:50am, the National Emergency Operation Center (NEOC) was activated at Level 1. Heavy rains and thunderstorms will continue to affect the Virgin Islands throughout the day and into the evening. The soil is already heavily saturated, and the Territory is under a Flash Flood Warning. A Flash Flood Warning means that flooding is very likely to occur in some low lying areas.
