Hurricane Preparedness Month

Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos Islands, April 29th, 2016 (DDME) - June 1st marks the beginning of the 2016 Atlantic Hurricane Season, however the Department of Disaster Management and Emergencies (DDME) will be observing Hurricane Preparedness Month beginning Sunday 1st May – 31st May, 2016 under the theme, “Preparing Make Sense….There is No Reason Not to Prepare. The Tropical Meteorology Project at the Colorado University is predicting the 2016 Hurricane Season to be an average one with (12) named storms, (5) of which will develop into hurricanes with two (2) developing into a major hurricane. In light of the predictions for the upcoming hurricane season, DDME would like to encourage residents to begin preparations early.

NEMO hosts teachers workshop as part of activities to commemorate the 37th Anniversary of the Eruption of the La Soufriere volcano

Kingstown, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, April 19th, 2016 (NEMO) - Senior teachers from primary and secondary schools within close proximity to the La Soufriere Volcano are currently participating in a workshop today, as part of NEMO’s activities to commemorate the 37th anniversary of the eruption of the La Soufriere Volcano.

Strengthening Early Warning Systems in the Caribbean

Bridgetown, Barbados April 19th, 2016 (CDEMA) – The institutionalization and harmonization of Early Warning System (EWS) as well as integrating vulnerable groups in all processes related to EWS were the main themes of the Caribbean Early Warning System Workshop that took place last week, in which more than 70 participants from National Disaster Management Agencies, National Meteorological Services, National Red Cross Societies, Non-Governmental Organizations as well as regional, research, intergovernmental and United Nations organizations identified next steps on how to enhance coordination among stakeholders towards the harmonization of multi-hazard EWS in the Caribbean.

Call for experts - GRCRSP - Enhancement of Crisis Response Coordination Mechanisms in the Caribbean

The Global Crisis Response Support Programme (GCRSP) is a two-year capacity development initiative of the European Union to support Latin American and Caribbean regional organizations to enhance their conflict and disaster early-warning capabilities through mainly tailored human capacity development measures. Besides the human capacity development measures GCRSP foresees to implement an end-of programme exercise at the end of the GCRSP in November 2016. Please click here for the Terms of Reference.

 
New project to create resilience culture in the Caribbean

Bridgetown, Barbados, Friday 08th, April 2016 - The Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) and the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) announced the project “Strengthening Regional Disaster Risk Reduction Strategies and Capacities for Resilience in the Caribbean”, that is supported by the Austrian Development Agency (ADA), during the Disaster Risk Reduction Development Partners Meeting which took place on April 7th, 2016 in Barbados. The purpose of the project is reinforcing disaster risk reduction and creating a resilience culture in the Caribbean.
