Remembering 2010 Earthquake in Haiti - Regional Roadmap for Urban Seismic Risk Management in the Caribbean

Bridgetown, Barbados, January 12th, 2017 - Today January 12, 2017 marks the 6th anniversary of the magnitude 7.0 earthquake that devastated Haiti. The earthquake affected over 3 million people and claimed up to 150,000 lives.

Earthquakes rank among the highest in potential to cause the most destruction in one event in the Caribbean. Many countries within the Caribbean Region are threatened by future large earthquakes which will occur when strain accumulation on segments of the adjacent tectonic plate boundary exceeds breaking point. To a large extent, the resulting damage will depend on the choice of risk management measures that are implemented to evade or reduce vulnerability to strong ground shaking.

Caribbean regional security, health and disaster agencies face comprehensive readiness test

Bridgetown, Barbados, January 10th, 2017 (CDEMA) – Security, public health and disaster management personnel from across the Caribbean will be put to the test as they participate in a training exercise aimed at improving regional responses during an emergency situation.

Earthquake south-east of Tobago

St. Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago, December 7th, 2016 (UWI) - On Tuesday evening 6th December, at 5:42PM local time, a strong earthquake occurred near Trinidad and Tobago about 15 km south-east of Scarborough, Tobago and 99km north-east of Port of Spain, Trinidad. This event was of magnitude 6.1 and was widely reported as felt in Trinidad and Tobago and neighbouring islands.

Situation Report #1 - Earthquake Activity in the Eastern Caribbean as of 8:00am EDT on December 7th, 2016

Message: A 6.2 magnitude earthquake jolted Trinidad and Tobago and was felt in Grenada on Tuesday December 06, 2016.

Situation:
According to the University of the West Indies (UWI) Seismic Research Centre (SRC) the 6.2 magnitude earthquake occurred at 5:42PM (Local Time) at a depth of 29KM. The earthquake was located Latitude 11.04N and Longitude 60.70W at 15.0 km SSE of Scarborough Trinidad and Tobago. The following aftershocks were also recorded within the same vicinity:

Jeremy Collymore honored by the Barbados Government for outstanding contribution to Disaster Management

Bridgetown, Barbados, December 6th, 2016 (CDEMA) – The former Executive Director of the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA), Jeremy M. Collymore was recently honoured by the Barbados Government for his outstanding contribution and leadership in Disaster Management at the national, regional and global levels. Collymore was honoured with the Barbados Service Star at the Awards of National Honours, on the celebration of Barbados’ 50th anniversary of Independence on November 30th, 2016.
